On New Year's Day, Joel and his husband were walking their dog, Wellington, in their neighbourhood when they noticed a large white dog standing motionless outside their home. The dog was clearly lost and wasn't moving at all.
”There was this beautiful white dog in our garden,” Joel said in a video published by The Dodo. The couple quickly realised that the dog, a Pyrenean Mountain Dog, was scared and very underweight. They brought her inside, warmed her up, and gave her some food.
A mysterious arrival
Joel immediately posted messages on local groups, hoping to find her owner. No one came forward. He then decided to take her to the vet to check for a microchip. Again, there was nothing. As they cared for her, Joel and his husband gradually grew attached to the dog, whom they named Waco.
Weeks went by, and Waco started to put on weight. At first, the couple wasn't concerned. That was until a particular detail caught their attention.
An unexpected surprise
Noticing the physical changes in the dog, Joel decided to go back to the vet. The diagnosis was swift. ”We went back to the vet,” he explained. ”And that's when we got a little extra piece of information.”
Waco was pregnant, and not just with one puppy. The couple then realised they hadn't just rescued one abandoned dog, but were about to save nine.
In February, on the night of the Super Bowl in the US, Waco went into labour. Within a few hours, she had given birth to eight perfectly healthy puppies.
Over the following months, the puppies grew up surrounded by care and attention. By May, each one had gone to a loving family. Waco, for her part, found some peace and is now fully enjoying her new life with Joel, his husband, and her canine companion.
Today, Joel says he is deeply grateful for this unexpected encounter. He can no longer imagine his life without Waco, the New Year's surprise who changed his world forever.
