A quiet morning at the Bendigo Animal Relief Centre in Australia took a sudden turn when a local man turned up at reception... with fifteen puppies in tow.
The man explained that he was walking along a popular trail when a small puppy suddenly appeared in front of him. As he got closer to see where it had come from, he found himself surrounded by a small pack. More than a dozen other puppies emerged, as if they were looking for someone to help them.
Unsure what to do in this situation, the walker decided to take the entire litter to the rescue centre so they could receive the care they needed.
A sudden arrival
For the rescue team, it was a huge surprise. Taking in fifteen puppies at once is a real logistical and medical challenge. The carers estimated that the little ones were about seven weeks old, which is very young to be separated from their mother, especially for the more fragile ones among them.
They all had to be treated for worms and parasites. Some were in relatively good health, while others were found to be very underweight and required more intensive care.
Sadly, one of the puppies didn't survive. The other fourteen, however, responded very well to treatment and quickly started to gain weight. Despite their difficult start in life, their behaviour surprised the carers: the little ones proved to be playful, curious, and particularly affectionate with people.
A surprising discovery
A few days after their arrival, the puppies were placed in pairs into foster homes, allowing them to grow up in a reassuring environment.
Meanwhile, the rescue centre launched an appeal to find their mother. The search eventually revealed that the fifteen puppies did not come from a single litter, but from two different litters, born just a few days apart.
One of the mothers was taken in by the rescue centre and named Mumma Sue, while the other remained with her owner. The rescue centre, however, covered the cost of spaying her to prevent any more accidental litters. Today, Mumma Sue is recovering peacefully in a foster home, and several of the puppies have already found their forever homes.
