This is a no-kill, cage-free rescue centre dedicated to dogs, cats, and farm animals.
The start of 2024 was particularly difficult for the rescuers at Refuge Sans Famille, as they shared in a Facebook post on 14th January.
An abandoned senior dog
The rescuers shared the sad story of Kosmo, a 16-year-old Beagle. He had lived faithfully by his family's side his entire life. However, on New Year's Eve, his family brought him to the rescue centre to abandon him.
They told the rescuers that the cost of having him put down was far too high for them, so they were leaving him at the centre instead. Although the rescue was already full to bursting, the team couldn't turn Kosmo away. They were genuinely afraid that the family might just dump him by the side of the road.
A heartbreaking void
The Refuge Sans Famille wanted to highlight that abandoning a senior dog, who has only ever known his family and his home, plunges the poor animal into deep emotional distress. As they so eloquently put it in their Facebook post, it creates "a brutal void left by abandonment at a time in their lives when they needed stability, gentleness, and companionship more than ever."
The rescuers also shared their own distress at the rise in abandonments like Kosmo's. They issued a reminder that adopting a pet is a lifelong responsibility. It means standing by them through the years, despite illness or hardship. It is possible to support Kosmo and the other animals at the rescue by making a donation or sponsoring one of them.
