The rescuers described it as "one of the worst cases of 2024 so far."
They were contacted by a member of the public who had spotted a dog tied to a post.
A heartbreaking discovery
The passer-by thought the dog looked pregnant and was in urgent need of help. Rescuers rushed to the scene, but what they found there was utterly heartbreaking.
The poor dog was tied to a post in the pouring rain. She had recently given birth; one puppy lay dead beside her, while another was still inside her, also deceased. The rescuers believe she had been in labour for several days and was exhausted and dehydrated.
A race against time
They rushed the dog, whom they named Cassie, for emergency surgery to remove the deceased puppy. However, the rescuers needed financial help to cover the cost of the operation.
They launched an appeal for help on social media, and in just three hours, the rescue centre raised an incredible $8,000. Cassie has since been moved to a foster home, where she is resting and recovering from her operation.
Cassie's story has touched hearts across the country. Another organisation, Desmond's Army Animal Law Advocates, has taken up her case and is offering a $5,000 reward for any information leading to an arrest. The investigation is ongoing.
