As she approached a junction, Dellymar caught sight of something out of the corner of her eye by the roadside.
That's when she found herself face to face with a litter of 10 abandoned puppies.
A chance encounter
Dellymar is the director of the Santuario de Animales San Francisco de Asís (SASFAPR) shelter and is used to rescuing stray dogs. However, the shelter was completely full that day. Even so, she knew she couldn't leave the puppies to fend for themselves like this.
Without hesitation, she parked her car and approached the dogs. As soon as she opened her car door, all the puppies rushed over to greet her. They were all wagging their tails, absolutely delighted to see her!
Affectionate dogs
The puppies' friendly behaviour confirmed the rescuer's worst fears: they had been abandoned by a family. Dellymar picked up the puppies one by one and carried them to her car. She dropped nine puppies off at the shelter, then took the last puppy, Lirio, to the vet for an examination.
Indeed, Lirio appeared to be injured and medical tests quickly confirmed multiple fractures in one of his hind legs. Fortunately, the little pup could count on a skilled veterinary team to help him heal. While they were treating Lirio, the other puppies - Lorenzo, Luna, Lisa, Luisa Lilypads, Lance and Liliard - thrived at the SASFAPR shelter.
New life
Very quickly, the puppies began receiving adoption applications. Luna moved to Boston and her sister Lisa went to live in New York. Only two puppies remain at SASFAPR: Lirio, whose leg is still being monitored, and Lorenzo who is awaiting eye surgery.
Once they're feeling better, Dellymar will help them find their forever families. The rescuer hadn't planned to save an entire litter that day, but thanks to her attentiveness and compassion, these 10 puppies now have wonderful lives ahead of them!
