This was a heartbreaking case of animal cruelty that took place in the beautiful Italian city of Milan.
The dog was found on the tarmac in a critical condition after throwing itself down from a building balcony in the Dergano district.
Extreme conditions that drove the animal to desperation
The circumstances of this tragedy were both shocking and incomprehensible.
The dog had been abandoned on the balcony for several days without water, food or shelter from the blazing sun, enduring temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius (104°F).
Eventually, in an act of desperation, the dog decided to jump from the balcony. This was probably its last attempt to escape from a hopeless situation.
Investigation underway
The Animal Protection Unit (Nucleo tutela animali) attended the scene, where they confirmed that the dog had been living in appalling conditions on the balcony for approximately 15 days.
As part of the investigation, a post-mortem examination will be carried out, which will likely reveal more details about the abuse the dog suffered and what led it to take this final action.
Unfortunately, this case isn't an isolated incident, either in Italy or in other countries.
Experts emphasise the importance of reporting any suspicions of animal cruelty as quickly as possible. Early intervention can mean the difference between life and death for these defenceless creatures.
