A shocking incident on the Greek island of Crete has led to serious consequences for the perpetrator.

Summer, sunshine and azure seas – that's how tourists usually remember Crete. However, in June 2022, this paradise island witnessed a shocking act of cruelty. As reported last Friday by the newspaper "Kathimerini", the perpetrator could face severe financial consequences for his actions.

A 59-year-old man abandoned five newborn kittens. Instead of helping the defenceless little ones, he threw them into a public rubbish bin right beside the motorway. They stood no chance.

Woman discovers the kittens

Shortly afterwards, a woman happened to find the animals and immediately took them home. Sadly, it was already too late for four of them. They were too small to survive. Only one kitten made it.

Thanks to CCTV footage, local police managed to identify and track down the 59-year-old. The case will have serious consequences for him, as he'll face court for killing animals.

Perpetrator to face court

The penalty for his actions will likely be severe. Greece only significantly tightened animal protection laws in 2021. Abandonment, cruelty, and especially causing their death are now serious crimes.

The perpetrator faces a fine of £43,000 for each kitten. Moreover, prison sentences are now possible for animal cruelty and killing, so he could even be sentenced to spend time behind bars.
