Firefighters from Trofa (a town in the Porto district of northern Portugal) were determined not to leave anyone behind during their most recent rescue mission.
So when they spotted a dog surrounded by flames, they knew they had to help.
Surrounded by a ring of fire
The dog was completely surrounded by a ring of fire, but thanks to the expertise and determination of the team, they were able to pull him to safety.
Slightly singed but in good condition, the dog seemed truly grateful to the people who rescued him.
An extraordinary thank you
For the next few hours the dog didn't leave the firefighters' side. He didn't bark once. Incredibly, he simply stayed nearby, watching over them.
The photo of the exhausted firefighters and the rescued dog sitting beside them moved thousands of people around the world.
With rural areas most at risk, firefighting teams have been working tirelessly to save as many creatures as possible from the flames. So far, sheep, goats, donkeys, pigs, pets and birds have all been brought to safety.
