Dog walkers in South Wales are being urged to stay alert after pet treats containing hidden fishhooks were discovered in popular walking areas.

Several bone marrow chew sticks with embedded hooks have been reported around Blaen Bran Community Woodland in Cwmbran and Castle Meadows in Abergavenny.

Pet owners raised the alarm on social media after spotting the laced treats, which posed a serious risk to animals.

Warning to dog owners

One local, Caroline Quigg, shared a warning on the Dogs of Torfaen Facebook page, saying the dangerous items were found between the woodland and the nearby Mountain Air car park. Gwent Police have since confirmed a warning has been issued.

Similar cases emerged in Abergavenny last month. One dog needed emergency surgery after swallowing two concealed hooks. Another dog walker, Jon Moss, said his dog narrowly avoided eating one of the booby-trapped treats thanks to a shorter leash and prior warnings.

Police investigation

Gwent Police have launched patrols in affected areas.

Inspector Emma Sowrey urged residents to remain cautious and report any suspicious activity. “We encourage dog owners to be vigilant and report concerns to us or the local council,” she said. Investigations into the source of the treats are ongoing.
