Switzerland is regarded by many as an idyllic holiday destination. The canton of Valais is particularly popular with tourists, offering the Matterhorn, wines from the Rhone valley, and the starting point of the world-famous Glacier Express.
But what happened a few summers ago shook residents to their core, in a deeply disturbing series of events that nobody expected.
Horrific surprise
Opening the wheelie bin to dispose of a rubbish bag, the resident heard a faint sound. Barely audible really – but they knew immediately that something wasn't right!
The person searched through the rubbish immediately and found a bag that was moving. Inside were three tiny kittens, so young their eyes were still closed.
Will they make it?
The rescuer contacted the nearest animal shelter immediately, who agreed to take the little ones in. The team at Ardon VS animal shelter, run by the Société pour la Protection des Animaux (SPA), was also shocked by the cruel way the three sibling kittens had been dumped.
Luck had saved them from an unthinkable fate.
Still too young to cope without their mother, a friend of the attending vet agreed to care for the kittens. With the right care, the team felt hopeful the babies would go on to make a full recovery.
