The incident, which occurred on May 5, was reported to the City of Burnaby Animal Control at around 4:15 p.m.
By the time an officer arrived, the dog was found panting heavily, tied with a short leash and unable to access any shade.
Concern over dog's condition
Though not in immediate distress, the dog’s condition raised alarm, prompting Officer Daniel McDonald to issue three bylaw violation notices, including one for not having a dog licence.
The case has since gone viral on social media, with a video capturing the scene drawing thousands of views.
The same dog reportedly appeared in a separate video shivering in cold weather, also tied to the same vehicle.
Best to leave dogs at home
McDonald called the tethering “peculiar” and warned that bringing pets on long errands is unsafe.
“It’s always best to leave dogs at home with fresh water,” he said.
Burnaby officials hope the attention will raise awareness about heat risks for pets and remind the public that Animal Control patrols are active daily to prevent harm to animals.
