When Zorro was hit by a car, his friend Grover refused to leave his side. Heartbreakingly, after a year in rescue, this adorable duo is still in need of a home.

Grover and Zorro are the best of friends. Their bond kept them going while living on the streets, where they looked out for each other during the most difficult of times.

Then, one day, Zorro was hit by a car as he tried to cross the road. The driver kept going, leaving the Pit Bull mix with three broken legs, a fractured elbow and a dislocated hip.

An unbreakable bond

Unable to move, Zorro lay in agony by the side of the road. And through it all, his friend Grover refused to leave.

"The fact that one was hurt and the other wouldn't leave him and like I said, he had a huge open space, the dog could have gone anywhere", Leslie Fernandez told Local 10.

While Miami-Dade Animal Services were trying to work out a way to save both dogs, a driver had spotted Grover and picked him up. Touched by their story, Leslie decided to help.

In collaboration with Interstate Partners for Animal Welfare, she tracked down Grover who had been taken 40 miles away.

"This is one of the most heartwarming stories I've seen in the 50 years I've been a veterinarian", explained Dr David Wise. "I have never seen an animal protect another that was injured".

He decided to do whatever he could to save Zorro's life, despite the poor pup's extensive injuries.

The reunion

When Grover was brought into the clinic, Zorro used the one leg he could to drag himself over to greet him. And thankfully, six surgeries later, both dogs are in perfect health.

But while they may have survived, they have yet to find a family.

With their time at the vet clinic running out, the team are faced with an impossible decision.

The dogs have been in rescue for over a year, with no prospect of adoption. Has the time come to separate them to find them their home?

"We want them to stay together after their heartwarming story", explained thisisthedog.org. "Please remember Zorro and Grover. Please share this post"
