This new law, championed by vet and MP Danny Chambers, aims to protect vulnerable animals from unethical practices.
Leading charities, including the RSPCA and Battersea Dogs and Cats Home, have praised the Government's commitment, describing it as a significant step forward in animal welfare.
Protecting pregnant cats and kittens
Cats have a gestation period of around 65 days, and experts emphasise the importance of keeping kittens with their mothers during early development.
The ban will prevent pregnant cats from enduring stressful conditions and stop kittens from being separated prematurely for profit.
An RSPCA spokeswoman highlighted the risks of allowing imports after harmful procedures, such as ear cropping and declawing, which are illegal in the UK. She noted that the ban would also reduce opportunities for illegal activity.
Moral duty to protect animals
Former security minister Sir John Hayes called the move a moral duty to protect defenceless animals.
Battersea Dogs and Cats Home added that the legislation is long overdue, addressing low-welfare imports and exploitation.
Environment Minister Daniel Zeichner confirmed the Government's intention to push the bill through Parliament swiftly, signalling a strong stance on improving animal welfare standards.
