On 2 December, the city dog pound in Manhattan announced on social media that it had rescued five puppies from near-certain death.

On the evening of 1 December, as temperatures plummeted, a passerby discovered five abandoned puppies next to rubbish in a car park.

The passerby immediately contacted the city pound, which came to collect them as quickly as possible.

Saved just in time

The puppies were taken to a vet, where they were found to be in good health. They received vaccinations and were later taken into temporary care. If they had not been discovered in time, the puppies likely would not have survived the freezing temperatures. Emily Gassmann, a Manhattan resident, stepped forward to care for the puppies in the interim.

Four males and one female are among the five. They were named after items on Popeye’s menu: biscuit, Mr. Gumbo (Soup), Coleslaw, Popcorn, and Shrimp.

Safe at last

At six weeks old, the puppies are now recovering from their ordeal. They are slowly adjusting to their new environment, surrounded by warmth and kindness. In two weeks, they will be ready to find permanent homes.

Authorities are appealing for information regarding the abandonment of the puppies. They have issued a public request for assistance, hoping to uncover details about this act of cruelty.
