Cara and Colin McBurnie were starting to fear the worst when their ginger and white cat, Beans, went missing from their home in Cumbernauld, North Lanarkshire.

After days of searching the local area without success, the couple faced every pet owner’s worst nightmare, that their beloved cat might never come home.

However, their worry turned to shock when they received an unexpected call from Cats Protection in mid-November. Beans had been found, not nearby, but over 300 miles away in Coventry, West Midlands.

Feline visitor

Kelly Ryan, who lives in Coventry, had noticed a new cat visiting her garden and seeking refuge in her outdoor cat box. Initially thinking the cat was just a local stray, she realised something was amiss when the feline started staying for days.

Concerned, Ms Ryan posted online about the mystery cat before contacting Cats Protection, who scanned Beans’ microchip and tracked down his owners. “I was relieved when I heard he had a family,” she said.

Emotional reunion

Overjoyed, the McBurnies made the long journey south to collect Beans. "I was shocked out of my mind,” Ms McBurnie admitted. "We thought he was lost forever."

The couple’s reunion with Beans was emotional, and the experience highlights the vital role of microchipping in bringing lost pets home. Beans is now safe and sound, resting comfortably after his unexpected adventure.
