It was a week of mixed emotions for handler Iain Marshall, after underwater sniffer dog Barra was awarded a posthumous order of merit by the PDSA.

Springer Spaniel Barra was Scotland's first underwater sniffer dog, who used his incredible talents to find and recover bodies in the River Clyde.

Qualifying alongside his handler Iain Marshall, Barra spent 11 years as a valued member of K9 Search & Recovery Scotland, before he retired in 2022.

Leaving a legacy

Following his retirement, Iain announced "with great sadness" that the sniffer dog had passed away, following a period of illness. "Barra devoted his entire life to helping others, right up to the age of 13, which is remarkable in itself", he wrote.

He may be gone, but Barra's legacy most definitely lives on. He received the European Animal Hall of Fame award earlier this year, in recognition of his commitment to search and recovery.

And most recently, the PDSA decided to award Barra an order of merit, presenting his handler with a medal and certificate.

Sharing images to Facebook, Iain wrote, "I'm so proud of the service that Barra gave over the years. Mixed emotions today as I miss him by my side".

An amazing team

Many shared messages of support, reflecting on the incredible bond the Spaniel and his handler shared.

"You were such a great team! Neither one of you could've done it without the other, the medal is a reflection of the hard work and commitment you both gave to search, rescue and recovery!", wrote one viewer.

"A well deserved award for the best dog in Scotland", shared another. "You should be extremely proud of this recognition. It's not only for Barra, but it also reflects on your dedication and commitment to your work".
