She often rescues sick and homeless cats in her neighbourhood in the Bay Area of Northern California, USA.
A garden rescue
Several months ago, she had to intervene to save a life right in her own garden!
As she was closing her door, Haley heard a familiar cry coming from a bush in front of her house. Her heart sank as she got closer and discovered a cat hiding under the leaves.
Haley tried to use a tasty treat to lure the cat out of the bush. The cat, later named Birdie, showed signs of hunger, but there was something unusual about the way she ate.
Even though she was clearly hungry, she would flinch and run away from her food. She would retreat back into the bush and cry, not letting anyone touch her.
A painful diagnosis
Haley's heart broke for Birdie. The cat's behaviour suggested a mouth injury, but the poor thing wouldn't let anyone get close enough to help.
After days of trying, Haley finally managed to catch the cat and took her straight to the local veterinary hospital.
The veterinary team welcomed Birdie and reassured the terrified little cat. They gave her medication to make eating less painful while she awaited surgery, but it didn't help as much as they had hoped.
Her mouth was so sore that she was afraid of her food, even with painkillers.
Once they could safely anaesthetise Birdie, the team thoroughly examined her mouth and diagnosed her with stomatitis, an oral disease that causes severe inflammation.
This condition is extremely painful. The only solution is to extract ALL the teeth and their roots.
After her surgery, Birdie finally began to show signs of improvement.
As she learned how to eat without teeth, Birdie quickly lost her fear of food and started to gain weight again.
She finally started to enjoy food again! Two months after her rescue, Birdie was ready to join her new family.
FOB found her the perfect home: she now lives with her amazing human mum and her little brother. She's the princess of her new home!
Birdie is now living her best life, and the rescuers at FOB couldn't be happier for her.
