Heart-breaking footage of a cat's reaction to being left alone by their owner nearly prompted his owner to abandon his holiday plans altogether.

The viral clip showed Pawl the cat holding a fish cat toy as he let out pitiful-sounding meows. Jonah describes the toy as Pawl's emotional support fish; he takes it everywhere he goes.

Misses owner

Despite cats' reputation for being elusive and independent, Pawl's obvious longing for his human companions highlights the emotional bond between cats and their owners.

Jonah adopted Pawl four years ago as a stray and always ensures the cat's well-being when he's away by hiring pet sitters and installing cameras to monitor him.

Usually, when Jonah checks the cameras while he's away, he spots his feline friend lying around and staring out the window.

However, this time, the footage showed Paul wandering around his home, meowing and, we must say, sounding rather sad for himself. Jonah admitted that Pawl's distress almost compelled him to cancel his holiday.

Future holiday companion

The video sparked an outpouring of reactions from viewers, with some sharing similar experiences with their cats. Some suggested that Jonah consider getting a furry companion for Pawl, while others admitted that they’d immediately cancel their trip if it was their cat!

While Jonah didn’t change his holiday in the end, he was so moved by Pawl's heart-breaking behaviour that he plans to acclimate him to car rides to include him in future trips.

They just had better remember to take Pawl’s precious fish toy along, too.
