Wilfred, a stray cat with a perpetually downcast expression, has left shelter staff utterly charmed.

His rotund figure and advanced age weren't the only things that tugged at their heartstrings. It was his unchanging look of sadness.

A life spent on the street

When he arrived at the shelter, Wilfred bore the fresh marks of a recent neck wound, which the Española Humane (EH) shelter team quickly treated. Further examinations revealed he was also FIV-positive, explaining the gravity of his injury. The weakened immune system made him susceptible to secondary infections, likely accounting for his condition.

Alongside his recent injury, signs of a street-worn life were etched into his body, suggesting a lifetime of survival. At roughly eight years old, it appeared he'd endured life's hardships since birth.

Friendly feline

Remarkably, Wilfred's gloomy exterior belied his true character. Despite his many years on the unforgiving streets, he turned out to be the sweetest of felines. In the security of his kennel, he thrived as if he knew that he had the space, comfort, and time to recover. Wilfred's magnetic presence was impossible to ignore, drawing everyone to his kennel. Once he'd recovered from his infection, Wilfred was ready to begin a new chapter. It wasn't long before the perfect family welcomed him into their home, complete with canine siblings and devoted owners.

While EH's staff might miss the melancholic eyes they'd grown fond of, they're thrilled to see the secretly joyful cat finally living the life he truly deserves.
