Whether you're flying, taking a long car journey or going to the vet, a dog carrier is an essential accessory in numerous situations. But selecting the right model for your pet is not always easy.

There are a wide variety of carriers available. From a dog carrier backpack or a luxury dog carrier bag to a travel dog bag, you are spoilt for choice. Look for a sturdy and durable bag in which your pet will feel comfortable and safe. It's also important that the bag is well ventilated so that the animal doesn't suffer from the heat. This way, you will be able to take your little friend with you anywhere, much to their delight.

Are you planning to go on holiday with your dog soon? Then it might be time to buy them a comfortable travel bag. To help you choose the most suitable model for your dog, we've put together this buyer’s guide. We have chosen several bags, each one safer and more practical than the other!

What is a dog carrier?

A dog carrier is an accessory that allows you to keep your dog comfortable while taking transportation. Not only does it offer great comfort to the animal, but it also helps them feel safe. Not all dogs enjoy car rides, so having their own little space lets the animal relax.

A carrier also gives the owner greater freedom of movement as the dog can't escape from the bag. It's very handy when you go to the vet, for example. It is also the ideal solution for transporting small puppies that cannot yet walk on a leash.

Getting ready to take a plane with your dog? There are airline approved dog carriers that are specifically designed for cabin luggage.

What types of dog carriers are there?

Dog bags come in different designs. Some of the most popular ones look like backpacks. They are the most common type of dog carrier and are easy to carry on your shoulders. However, they might cause back pain, especially if your dog is heavy.

A travel dog carrier bag is ideal for taking your pet with you in the car. Larger than the traditional backpack, it gives your pet more space. Your dog will be able to sit comfortably during the trip while feeling safe and secure.

There are also sling bags, which are usually worn over the shoulder. This type of bag is very elegant and allows you to keep your dog as close to you as possible. If they want to, they can even stick their head out.

How do I choose a dog carrier?

To choose the right transport bag for your dog, you need to consider how and in what situations you want to use it. Are you planning on taking the car with your dog? Flying? Going to the shops?

You should also consider the size of your pet. If the bag is too small, your pet will have to adopt an uncomfortable position, while if it is too wide, the animal could jump out.

Materials are also an important factor. You should choose a bag that is strong and comfortable, and that will withstand the weight of your dog. Also, make sure that the inner lining is soft enough for their paws. If you have a sensitive pet, check that the components are hypoallergenic.

Are all dog carrier bags accepted on planes?

No, not all carriers are accepted on planes. It all depends on the weight of the dog and the size of the bag. To remain in the cabin, the animal and the bag together must not weigh more than 8 kg. The bag must not exceed the 46 x 28 x 24 cm dimensions.

If your dog is too big to travel with you in the cabin, it will go in the luggage section. In this case, the crate must comply with IATA (International Air Transport Association) standards. It will have to follow a number of requirements: a rigid shell, central locking and retractable or removable wheels.

Please note that snub-nosed dogs such as Pekingese or Boxers cannot be carried in the cargo hold, as they may suffer from respiratory problems.

How long can a dog stay in a carrier bag?

If your dog is well installed in a bag adapted to their size, they can stay there for several hours, as long as the journey lasts. Of course, regular bathroom breaks should be arranged. If you're travelling by car, take breaks at motorway service areas to stretch your dog's legs.

If your dog is stressed or showing signs of agitation but you can't open the  carrier, interact with your pet to reassure them. Show them that you are calm and that they don't need to worry. You can also slip in some treats to calm them until the next break.

Are all dog carriers equally comfortable?

Some carrier bags are more comfortable than others! Ideally, the dog carrier should be made of a soft, cushy fabric that your pet will enjoy lying on.

You should also choose a carrier with vents and large openings. This allows air to circulate, which is particularly useful in hot weather. In addition, your dog will be able to look at the landscape and what's going on around them and won't feel too isolated.
