Strange noises near a dumpster
Recently, Kelsey Petko, a resident of Missouri in the United States, stopped in her tracks when she heard strange noises coming from a nearby dumpster. She followed the sound to an empty Pampers nappy box. A tiny brown puppy, visibly malnourished, poked his head out between the cardboard flaps, and their eyes met. Heartbroken, Kelsey took a photo and shared it in a local Facebook group.
When they saw the post, the team from St. Louis Animal Care and Control decided to step in. Officer Habib went straight to the scene and brought the puppy safely back to the Center for Animal Rescue and Enrichment of St. Louis (CARE STL), the rescue organisation that runs the city shelter. They named him Porky.
A two-month-old puppy weighing under 4 lb
Upon his arrival, rescuers estimated that Porky was around two months old and weighed barely 3.7 lb. Starving and with no body fat whatsoever, he could not even stand up on his own. In photos and videos, he already looked tiny, but CARE STL explained that he was even smaller in real life.
The medical team immediately started emergency care. Despite his critical condition, the puppy showed remarkable spirit. "He wanted to live. He wanted to play. He wanted to be a puppy," the rescue team shared, describing a bright spark in his eyes even when his tiny body wouldn't cooperate.
A community rallying behind him
Within just a few weeks, Porky made huge strides and built up enough strength to stand on his own four paws. Local residents rallied behind him, regularly phoning the shelter to ask for updates. The rescue team said they were deeply touched to see so many people who had never met Porky cheering him on.
Recovering in a foster home
Porky has now left the shelter to continue his recovery in a loving foster home. His journey is far from over, as he still needs to gain a lot of weight slowly and safely, CARE STL noted. He is growing stronger by the day, and once he reaches a healthy weight, he will be ready to look for his forever home.
