Along the way, the hikers spotted a tiny, helpless creature all on its own. They naturally assumed it was an abandoned kitten.
Growing doubts
They decided to take the little kitten with them. However, when they reached a mountain shelter, they began to have doubts. The tiny kitten had blue eyes and a tabby coat, just like a domestic cat. Yet, there was still something quite different about it.
They soon realised that the kitten was actually a European Wildcat, also known as a forest cat. This wild species is one of the last remaining felines in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques. Normally, these wildcats avoid any contact with humans!
In safe hands
The hikers immediately contacted local wildlife rescue specialists. The tiny female, who was less than a month old when found, was taken in by the Hegalaldia association in Ustaritz.
To prevent her from getting used to humans, her carers wore special camouflage outfits when feeding her. Today, the young wildcat has been weaned. She is growing up in a lush 215-square-foot enclosure that mimics her natural habitat. For now, rescuers are waiting a little longer before releasing her back into the wild.
The association wants to remind everyone of a vital rule: if you see a young wild animal on its own, it does not necessarily mean it has been abandoned. Its mother could be hiding very close by. It is always best to take a photo of the animal and contact a specialist rescue centre before taking action.
