Vet refuses to put down Maltese puppy and makes a decision that changes his life forever

By Elodie Carpentier

When an owner demanded that their puppy be put to sleep, Dr McGlasson made an impulsive decision to take him in. Just a few weeks later, the little dog who seemed to have no hope has become his best friend.

This story could have had a very tragic end. When a Maltese puppy just a few weeks old arrived at Dr McGlasson's veterinary clinic, his health was in a critical state.

Weighing just 12 ounces (350g), the tiny puppy refused to eat, suffered from constant vomiting and had frequent seizures. With his health rapidly declining and the vet bills mounting, his owner asked the vet to put Chicky to sleep.

An impulsive choice and a round-the-clock battle

Dr McGlasson refused to put him down and offered to take responsibility for the puppy instead. His initial plan was to nurse the animal back to health before finding him a foster home. However, the first fortnight proved to be exhausting, as the puppy had to be syringe-fed day and night.

Against all the odds, Chicky's condition began to stabilise, and then he improved day by day. Thanks to constant care and attention, the little creature regained his strength and made a full recovery.

An unexpected bond that changed everything

But there was a wonderful surprise in store for Dr McGlasson, going far beyond medical healing. It was the incredible bond that developed between them during those sleepless nights. Any plans to put him up for adoption quickly vanished: "This little dog has become my best friend. We are obsessed with each other," the vet confided when sharing his story.

Chicky's story has now become a heartwarming symbol and a gentle reminder for the vet. Sometimes, impulsive decisions driven by pure compassion can lead to the most beautiful friendships of our lives.
