When teams from France's Brigitte Bardot Foundation arrived at the door of the flat, accompanied by local police, they were prepared for a delicate operation. Following reports from neighbours concerned about persistent smells and noises, they believed they were there to rescue thirteen dogs. But the reality that awaited them was far more harrowing.
Twenty-three lives in the shadows
Inside, they were met with a scene of great distress. The animals were living in squalid conditions, without light, space, or ever being allowed outside. One of them was even permanently tied to a desk leg with a short lead. Terrified and clearly never socialised, the dogs hid wherever they could.
The final count came as a complete shock to the rescuers. It wasn't thirteen, but twenty-three dogs they found waiting for help in the flat that had become their prison. The operation to capture them all safely was lengthy and required immense patience from the team.
First steps towards happiness
One by one, all twenty-three dogs were removed from this environment and brought to safety. They have all been taken to one of the Brigitte Bardot Foundation's shelters, where a new life can finally begin. For most of them, the journey marked a complete break from the only world they had ever known.
Perhaps the most moving moment was watching them take their first steps outside. Seeing these dogs, some of whom had never left the flat, feel fresh grass under their paws for the very first time was an incredibly powerful sight.
