This extraordinary story of resilience took place in Forest Park, Illinois, in the United States. Anna, an animal welfare inspector and director of the charity April's Kittens, responded to a heartbreaking report: a cat had been left chained under a house porch for several days, without food or water.
Despite her hunger and distress, the little tabby cat immediately trusted her rescuer. With the help of the Chicago police, the residents of the house signed the surrender papers. It was then that the volunteers discovered a terrible truth.
A shocking discovery
When they scanned the cat for a microchip, the team discovered that she, named Blue, actually belonged to different owners from the people in the house. The rescue centre sent multiple messages to the registered contact details. Although notifications showed the messages had been read, the owners never bothered to reply.
The charity therefore followed legal procedures and officially took Blue into their care, before placing her in a foster home with April, the founder of the organisation.
A long road to recovery
Although Blue had shown a flicker of affection on the day of her rescue, living indoors brought her trauma to the surface. The cat had come to associate human hands with a threat.
"At first, she didn't trust me at all. She wouldn't let me touch her," April told the media outlet LoveMeow. "I worked with her every day, just by sitting with her and talking to her to show her she was safe."
Without ever rushing her, the young woman let time work its magic. Little by little, Blue began to let her guard down and finally accepted her first strokes – a huge victory for this neglected feline.
A few months later, Blue has completely turned her life around. Gone are the days of being chained and hungry; the cat now roams freely throughout the rescue centre's building.
"Now, she wanders all over the building and is an extremely confident girl," says a delighted April. Having become the centre's mascot, the little tabby now approaches people for fuss and chooses her napping spots wherever she pleases. A well-deserved happy ending.
