Assistance dog stolen from garden: owner tricked by fake AI videos of her return (video)

By Ludivine Mazzotti

In Denver, Colorado, Hannah Cummins has appealed to local residents for help in finding her dog.

Hannah runs a children's nursery in the city of Denver, in the US.

On 16th May, Hannah contacted the police to report that her six-year-old dog, Opal, had been stolen from her garden.

A theft in broad daylight

Hannah had popped home briefly to pick up some supplies while Opal was enjoying the sun in the garden. The next moment, the dog was gone.

Opal has not only been with Hannah for six years, but she is also an assistance dog. She helps out at the nursery, providing emotional support to children going through difficult times. The children, who are used to having her around, miss her terribly.

Heartbreaking fake videos

Hannah's appeal for help has generated numerous false leads, including some from malicious people who made her believe they had found Opal. Some even sent her a fake, AI-generated video of the dog... a truly heartbreaking act.

To this day, Opal is still missing. Several people have reported seeing a homeless man with a dog that looks very much like Opal. The police investigation is ongoing.
