Pig found wandering the streets: dog rescue takes an unprecedented risk

By Elise Petter

Every day, the team at Furry Friends Humane, a rescue centre in Jupiter, Florida, USA, take the shelter's dogs out for their daily walk. But during a recent outing near their West Palm Beach facility, volunteers witnessed a truly heartbreaking scene.

During the walk, the dog walkers spotted a very unusual visitor: a small, stray pig frantically circling a bin, sniffing around for scraps of food. While wild pigs are not uncommon in the area, this particular animal's behaviour immediately alerted the staff.

After watching him cautiously, the volunteers realised it was an emergency. “His behaviour showed he wasn't just passing through, and he didn't move with the confidence of a typical wild boar or pig,” team member Gabriella Gluck explained to The Dodo. “He seemed scared, distressed, and hungry.

A cross-species rescue mission

The animal's origin remains a mystery. Rescuers suspect he was either abandoned by his former owners or escaped from a dangerous farm. One thing was certain: left to fend for himself, he wouldn't have survived. Without hesitation, the team set up a humane trap to secure him. Once the little pig was captured and brought to safety, they named him Randy.

As an organisation focused on dogs and cats, people sometimes assume our compassion stops there, but rescue doesn't work like that. Distress doesn't have a species label,” Gabriella Gluck powerfully stated.

From street bins to a life of luxury

Randy's story then took a wonderful turn. He didn't stay behind the shelter's bars for long. A volunteer from the organisation fell in love at first sight and decided to officially adopt him into her own family.

Randy's new home is a true paradise: a huge, green plot of land where he can run around freely. Even better, he was welcomed by two other pigs, who are now his daily companions. “We were looking for an environment that understands pigs, respects their needs, and offers him a real quality of life and companionship. That's what makes this placement so perfect,” Gabriella said happily. Randy has definitely traded pavement scraps for the life of a king.
