A race for life
They had barely stepped outside when Andy and his dogs sensed a presence behind them. "I could hear fast footsteps coming up behind me," he recalls. In a split second, a wild rabbit shot down the driveway, overtaking the group at a phenomenal speed.
The reason for this sprint soon became clear. The home's security cameras captured what happened next: a fox was hot on the heels of the small creature. But upon spotting Andy and, more importantly, his two dogs, the predator slammed on the brakes, instantly giving up on its breakfast.
A deliberate strategy?
The rabbit, whether it did so intentionally or not, found the perfect way to deter its pursuer. By practically throwing itself at the dogs' feet, it forced the fox to turn back and avoid a confrontation with larger animals.
Andy remains impressed by the manoeuvre: "I don't know if it chose that route because of the dogs, or if it was just in survival mode and decided to go for broke. I like to think it was its strategy." Whatever the case, the plan worked perfectly. The rabbit was spotted later, calmly returning to the scene once the danger had passed.
