Salsa is a Tabby cat with a feisty character. She lives in the UK with her two mums, Laura and Sara. A few weeks ago, her owners noticed a change in her behaviour. Salsa started spending all her time in the spare room, persistently staring and meowing at the space under the sofa.
Laura would sometimes hear footsteps while Salsa was sleeping peacefully beside her. One night, at 4 a.m., she even thought she saw a shadow slipping out of the room. At first, Sara thought Laura was just imagining things. But Salsa wouldn't let it go. She knew someone else was in the house.
The secret hidden under the sofa
Given the cat's insistence, Sara eventually crouched down and peered under the furniture. Two bright eyes stared back at her. It wasn't a lost toy. Another cat had moved into their home. The pieces of the puzzle finally fell into place, and all the strange occurrences of the week suddenly made sense.
The stowaway was a black cat. Laura and Sara recognised her: it was a familiar face from the neighbourhood they had nicknamed Frijoles. They were used to feeding the local cats in their garden. Clearly, Frijoles had decided to try out the indoor comforts for herself, using the open window as a makeshift cat flap.
A fateful adoption
Far from being annoyed, the two women were delighted. ”Brilliant! Two cats!” Sara exclaimed to The Dodo. The most surprising thing was Salsa's reaction. Usually very possessive, she seemed to tolerate this new presence in her territory. Frijoles, however, is still a bit of a free spirit. She sometimes leaves to explore the neighbouring gardens before coming back.
The couple has already scheduled a vet visit for this weekend. The plan is to check her health and scan her microchip to make sure she doesn't belong to anyone. But for Laura, there's no doubt in her mind: Frijoles has chosen them. Salsa is about to get a little sister, much to her owners' delight.
