Katrina Coakley adopted her dog, Maverick, from a rescue centre.

When she adopted her dog, the staff at Border Tails Rescue in Northbrook, Illinois, couldn't tell her exactly what his crossbreed was.

Katrina was very keen to find out about her dog's origins, so she decided to get a DNA test for him.

An unexpected discovery

The young woman waited eagerly for the results. When they finally arrived on 8th February, she was so shocked that she decided to share them on the social media platform Threads.

It turned out that Maverick is 64.2% Puerto Rican Village Dog, also known as 'Satos' in Puerto Rico. Katrina had never heard of this dog breed, so she did some research.

An ancient dog breed

Puerto Rican Village Dogs lived alongside the indigenous people of Puerto Rico and were later crossbred with dogs brought over by the first European settlers. Satos dogs have lived on the island of Puerto Rico for thousands of years and are known for their gentle nature and resilience.

Katrina was delighted to discover Maverick's origins, especially as the results celebrate Puerto Rico. She decided to share her dog's heritage in a Super Bowl-themed post on Threads. It was her way of honouring the island's culture, which has been celebrated on the world stage by Puerto Rican artists like Bad Bunny.
