The resident reported seeing a dog covered in petrol wandering the streets.
When rescuers arrived at the scene, they found a dog named Penelope sitting completely still on the porch of a house in the middle of a scorching heatwave.
Covered in petrol
Penelope's coat was soaked in petrol, particularly around her muzzle and paws. The rescuers also noticed that her eyes were red and irritated, likely from the fuel. Despite her ordeal, Penelope approached them gently, as if she knew they were there to help.
But that was not all. During the very same rescue mission, they discovered a mother cat and her eight kittens, who had also been abandoned in the sweltering heat. Although the shelter mainly takes in dogs, the team did not hesitate to rescue them too. The whole little family is currently resting safely at the home of a shelter staff member.
On the road to recovery
After a thorough bath, medical treatment, and plenty of love, brave Penelope has started to regain her strength. Veterinarians also noticed she was limping and have scheduled further tests to find out what is causing it.
Shelter staff explained that their main priority is always to try and locate the owners of lost pets. However, if no one comes forward to claim Penelope and she is given a clean bill of health, she will soon be put up for adoption.
