This discovery is enough to worry any dog owner. In Pennsylvania, USA, a local resident claims to have found several beef sticks with fish hooks hidden inside, scattered on the streets where she usually walks her pet.
This could have tragic consequences for any dogs that might swallow these treats, completely unaware of the danger.
The alarming discovery was made by Haley VanLuvanee during a walk in downtown Easton, Pennsylvania. She shared photos of her find on social media, and the images were later shared on the Lost Pet Reporter for Lehigh and Northampton Counties Facebook page. They show small pieces of meat sticks, each pierced with a golden fish hook.
The young woman stated that she had picked up "five" of them, adding that there could be more in the area.
Online, she urged caution: "Dog owners in downtown Easton, please be careful when walking your pets… Keep a close eye on your dogs and on the ground around you." She added: "This is extremely dangerous and upsetting. The person doing this should be ashamed of themselves."
Serious risks for animals
These booby-trapped treats could have been fatal. A dog chewing on such bait risks getting the hook stuck in its mouth. According to Petco's Animal Care, Education and Compliance (ACE) team, symptoms can include excessive drooling, pawing at the mouth, or difficulty swallowing.
If the hook is swallowed and gets lodged in the oesophagus or stomach, the consequences can be more severe. These include gagging, vomiting, loss of appetite, difficulty swallowing, weight loss, or dehydration. In the most serious cases, the hook can perforate internal tissues and lead to severe complications.
If you have any doubts, you should always consult your vet to avoid taking any risks with your pet's health.

An ongoing investigation
Following this discovery, the local police have been notified and an investigation is underway to identify the person responsible. In the meantime, the authorities are urging pet owners to be extra vigilant during walks.
A simple treat left on the ground can sometimes hide a terrible trap. It is therefore always best to teach your dog never to eat anything they find on the floor.
