Being reunited with your dog after five long years apart is nothing short of a miracle. Yet that’s exactly what one family in Virginia, USA, experienced, all thanks to one tiny detail.

It all started when two passers-by noticed a dog playing alone in the snow near a local leisure centre.

Worried, they immediately took him to the Fairfax County Animal Shelter (FCAS). This simple act of kindness was about to change several lives.

An unexpected discovery during a routine check

When he arrived at the shelter, the dog, soon identified as Luke, was in good health, a representative from FCAS told Newsweek via Facebook Messenger. As is standard procedure, the team carried out a check and scanned his microchip.

The results came back quickly: Luke was registered, and the associated contact details were still active. The shelter immediately contacted the family listed on the file. Less than an hour later, the owners arrived at the shelter in disbelief. Their dog, who had been missing for five years, had just been found.

Luke had been adopted as a puppy and had vanished at the age of 3. Despite extensive searches, his family had never been able to find him.

An emotional reunion

The shelter shared photos of the reunion in a Facebook post on 28 January. The pictures show the family rushing towards Luke, hugging him and covering him with kisses. After five years apart, the emotion is palpable.

”Luke's family and our team had tears in their eyes when he was finally reunited with them,” said the shelter representative. ”We are so happy we could help Luke find his way home!”

In the photos, the dog has a radiant expression, as if no time had passed at all. The story quickly touched the hearts of internet users. A few hours after it was published, the post had more than 3,300 reactions, nearly 300 shares and 208 comments.
