Officers from the New Kent Sheriff's Office Animal Protection Unit discovered a stray dog on the side of a remote road. The poor dog had a snare trap cable tightened around her neck. These are typically used to capture wild animals.
The device works like a zip tie, tightening without loosening, and can inflict severe injuries on an unsuspecting animal.
When rescuers arrived, the dog's jaw was severely swollen and she was in extreme pain. To make matters worse, she was pregnant. Despite her critical condition, the team immediately began the rescue operation.
A critical rescue
Rushed to a vet, the dog, who the rescue staff named Maude, received the necessary care to treat her infections and reduce the inflammation around her wound. The vets also confirmed she was carrying a single puppy, which is quite rare.
Fortunately, the mum-to-be began to recover thanks to medication and the support of volunteers.
After several days in hospital, Maude was able to leave the veterinary clinic. A short time later, she gave birth to her puppy.
An incredible show of support
Thanks to a fundraising campaign, more than $10,000 was raised to cover her current and future veterinary costs.
