A puppy rescued by an American charity had been dyed purple. Even today, the dye is proving difficult to remove.

Ellen Ballon Dante, CEO of the Deity Animal charity, thought she had seen it all in her career. But she never imagined she would meet Benny, a little purple dog.

As reported by The Dodo, someone had thought it was a good idea to dye this adorable puppy.

A toxic dye

The young pup arrived at the shelter after a family found him in a very vulnerable state. Benny was adorable and quickly bonded with Ellen.

Ellen soon noticed that the dye had damaged the animal's coat. The poor thing had scabs, particularly around his ears, and also had ulcers on one of his eyes.

The vet was unable to remove the dye. The colour has faded but has not disappeared completely.

A happy ending

Fortunately, Benny was placed with a foster family. The puppy is doing well, even after such a traumatic ordeal.

"Given his past, he was still so receptive to love... He's an extraordinary puppy," Ellen concluded.
