When Julio Alonso went for a stroll during his lunch break, it seemed like any other day.
But things quickly took an unexpected turn, when he spotted a tiny black and white kitten huddled by the side of the road.
Heartbreaking condition
Julio cautiously approached, taking care not to frighten the kitten.
On closer inspection, he realised the poor little cat was covered in fleas and ants. He seemed completely resigned to his fate, with insects crawling all over his face.
Concerned by the heartbreaking condition he saw, the animal lover immediately called his colleague Michelle for help.
"We didn't know what condition he was in, whether he was injured, frail or had a fracture. He was covered in ants, and Michelle picked him up by the neck and brought him to the office," Julio told Newsweek.
She washed and comforted the little kitten, before taking him in to Orange County Animal Care.
Hoping for a loving home
Trick, as he was named by shelter staff, was found to have an upper respiratory infection that needed treating.
But thanks to Julio and Michelle he was in the best hands possible. Julio later posted an update to TikTok explaining that Trick was doing well and that he had been put up for adoption.
