A 22-year-old man, who has been dating his girlfriend for seven months, recently faced an unexpected ultimatum that put his relationship to the test.
The vegan dilemma
The man took to Reddit to tell his story and ask users for their opinion. He describes his girlfriend as "amazing" and says they are "super compatible in a lot of ways."
However, her commitment to veganism presented a significant challenge. One day, she sat him down and told him there could be no future for them unless he gave away his beloved cat, Mittens. Her reason? Owning a pet, she argued, violates the principles of veganism. Indeed, cats are obligate carnivores, so their food contains meat.
A tough decision
This ultimatum felt like a slap in the face to the man, who felt like he now had to choose between his cherished pet and his relationship. As a responsible pet owner, the man told his girlfriend that he would not be giving up Mittens. Although her request seemed outlandish, he was still heartbroken that an otherwise perfect relationship would have to end for the sake of living a fully vegan lifestyle.
The situation sparked a heated debate on Reddit about the lengths one should go to for love and the boundaries of personal beliefs.
"Dude I got rid of a Savannah Monitor I had for years over a girl. I had that thing from the time it was the size of my pinky to weighing 9lbs. I tamed it and could take it for walks and everything. I gave him up, but the relationship didn’t work out. I’ll never forgive myself for putting her first over a. Pet that had been there for me in the darkest of times. The cat stays bro. Don’t be stupid, true love is full of compromises. A cat shouldn’t be one. You’ve already changed enough bro.", wrote one user.
"She suggested to give it away? It makes no sense whatsoever…will it consume less meat with another owner? Of course not. It’s like boasting about your lack of garbage because you dump it all in your neighbour’s yard.", wrote another.
