Great Pyrenees are GIANT dogs – which makes them look even more like polar bears! They are best suited for living in a house in the country. They are very loyal and affectionate with their family, but also very protective of them, which makes them fantastic guard dogs.

Also known as “smiling Sammies”, Samoyeds are one of the most trainable and affectionate of all the spitz/primitive-type breeds. They are friendly with everyone and make great family pets.

Chow Chows come in all sorts of different colours, but if you ever see a cream one, you could easily mistake them for a small polar bear! Chow Chows are for experienced owners only – they are stubborn and independent. Don’t expect them to bend to your will! It’ll most likely be the other way around!

Big and beautiful, the Maremma Sheepdog is a rural dog who loves nothing more than protecting its “pack”. Maremmas are very devoted to those they love, but can be quite aloof with strangers.

White Swiss Shepherds, especially the long-haired varieties, can look a lot like polar bears! Swiss Shepherds are very intelligent and easy to train. However, you should teach them to stay on their own from a young age, as they are very sensitive dogs who can easily suffer from separation anxiety.

The Hungarian Kuvasz is a large breed of dog that would do best living in a rural environment. Being a working and guarding breed, they need an owner who knows what they’re doing! They are, however, very gentle and protective with their family.

Similar in looks to the Samoyed, the American Eskimo Dog is a very intelligent and highly trainable dog. They need lots of mental and physical exercise to be happy, but they make wonderful additions to active families!

A white or cream Pomeranian looks just like a little polar bear cub! Poms are the ultimate lapdogs: They love to be with their owners at all times. They can be yappy and feisty little dogs though, so be prepared!

Japanese Spitz are active little dogs. They are family oriented, friendly, and playful. They are easily trained and very affectionate with their owners. Just be prepared for a lot of shedding!
