We bet your feline friend wants to participate in this festive season, probably in his own way by attacking the Christmas tree… But we love them for it! Christmas is all about love: so let’s spread the love today and cover your cat or kitten with kisses and hugs, show him how much you love him and how much he means to you.

We want to celebrate love as well this Christmas and what better way than to show you adorable images of cats and kittens feeling the Christmas mood? Dressed as little Santas, wrapped in tinsels, proudly posing next to the tree… You are in for a treat!

In the midst of the Christmas hustle and bustle of baking biscuits, lighting candles, decorating the tree and sending out Christmas cards, we tend to forget that all these changes are not only stressful for our felines, but can also be dangerous for them. But don't worry, with a little care and attention, everything will work out perfectly.

5 tips for a safe Christmas with your cat

For cats, the Christmas period is often associated with a lot of stress and danger. We explain how to avoid dangers during the Christmas period. If you follow these five tips and tricks, you will have a safe and relaxing Christmas with your cat.

Tip 1: Create a quiet place for your cat

Cats are creatures of habits and they find it difficult to cope with all the changes in their familiar surroundings. Bear in mind that noise and agitation, especially on Christmas Eve, quickly become excessive for cats. Outdoor cats usually escape through the cat flap, but indoor cats are disturbed by the noise and the hectic pace of the house. Therefore, make sure you keep a comfortable and quiet place in your home for your cat to rest if necessary.

Tip 2: Keep candles and string lights out of the cat's reach

For cats, candles and tinsels are often underestimated danger. Lit candles should always be put somewhere out of reach of the cat. Never leave lit candles unattended. Cats can get caught in the cable and strangle themselves while playing with string lights. If the cat bites the cable, it can get an electric shock, which can be very dangerous. Therefore, make sure that the strings of lights are well fixed in the tree.

Tip 3: Ensure safety around the tree

In order to limit the many dangers of the Christmas tree, you should pay attention to the following points:

  • Make sure the tree is stable
  • For decorations, use materials such as wood, straw or hard plastic. If you really want to put Christmas glass balls, hang them out of the cat's reach and make sure they are well attached to the branches
  • Make sure that Christmas lights are securely attached to the branches
  • Pick up the needles from the tree as soon as possible, so that your cat cannot swallow them

Tip 4: Avoid toxic plants and essential oils

Poinsettia, mistletoe and Christmas roses are plants that traditionally take up residence in homes at Christmas, but these plants are toxic to cats. If your cat is one of those who likes to chew plants, the above plants should be avoided. If your cat bites into a poinsettia or mistletoe leaf while your back is turned, your feline may suffer severe symptoms of poisoning, such as diarrhoea, vomiting and acute cramps, as well as severe kidney damage.

Essential oils can also be very dangerous for your cat if she licks them.

Tip 5: No chocolate for cats!

Chocolate should never be allowed to fall into a cat's paws, as it is extremely toxic, and can lead to life-threatening problems such as cramps, vomiting, diarrhoea and high blood pressure.

Now that you know how to keep your cat safe this Christmas, it’s time to celebrate! We wish you and your cat a Merry Christmas!
