Piglet is a little dog who doesn’t see nor hear. Nevertheless, he turned his disability into a strength.

Piglet did not have an easy start in life. He was born pink, deaf and blind, and stayed in a house with 37 other dogs. He couldn’t really count on proper caring so, Piglet was brought to a shelter.

Diversity is okay

In 2017, Melissa Shapiro, a veterinarian, noticed a cute puppy while visiting a shelter in Westport and decided to adopt him. She named him Piglet because of his pink colour.

For many weeks, we struggled to overcome his profound disability. The puppy was very anxious and fearful. It was only after a few weeks that he gained confidence and showed his character. He's a really fantastic dog and I can't imagine my life without him, ”writes Melissa.

Today, Piglet has a happy and very active life. Together with his human mum, Melissa, he is involved in charity. His story inspires hundreds of children to overcome differences and challenges.

It all started with a school in Massachusetts that set out Piglet to become a role model for their children. Whenever there were problems at home, the children were told to ask themselves, "What would Piglet do?". This initiative has now become an educational program used by many kids around the world.

Educating kids about differences

Melissa noticed her dog's popularity growing and so, she decided to create an account on social media, a website and a charity. She also wrote a book about Piglet and donated the profits from the sale to charity.

Piglet and his human mum are dedicated to educating children about diversity and teaching them to be kind and empathetic. Well done, Piglet!
