This touching story, reported by the BBC, reminds us of the importance of protecting our furry friends in the summer. Gracie, an adorable seven-year-old white cat, had to face a difficult ordeal: the amputation of both her ears after prolonged exposure to the sun.
A life-saving diagnosis
When she arrived at the Bracknell & Wokingham branch of the UK charity Cats Protection, a diagnosis was made. To stop the disease from spreading, vets had no choice but to surgically remove both of her cancerous ear flaps.
Prolonged sun exposure in cats can cause a type of skin cancer called squamous cell carcinoma. This malignant tumour mainly develops on thinner, less furry areas of skin that lack protective pigment, such as the ear tips, eyelids, or nose. It is a locally aggressive cancer, but if detected early, surgery—like the one Gracie underwent—can effectively stop the disease.
A new life full of love
Fortunately, the story has a happy ending. A year after the major operation, Gracie is now in perfect health. Although her appearance has changed, it didn't deter her new owner in the slightest, who fell in love with her at first sight:
"On the inside, she is wonderful. Her appearance doesn't matter… I love her to bits," her new owner shared emotionally.
