RSPCA warns owners of the dangers of using damp towels the wrong way this summer

By Greta Inglis

Animal charity RSPCA has warned owners of the dangers of using damp towels the wrong way, with some methods putting dogs at risk during the summer.

Damp towels are often used to cool dogs down, particularly as temperatures rise in the summer months.

But the way in which this trick is used makes all the difference, the RSPCA has warned.

Never over the body

"Don’t place damp towels directly over the dog’s body, as this can trap heat and worsen their condition. You can place wet or damp towels beneath the dog - remembering to re-wet the towel frequently - but never over their body."  the charity explained.

"When a dog gets too hot and can’t lower its temperature by panting, it can develop heatstroke. This can be fatal, so you need to act fast to reduce their body temperature first, then get help."

The risk of heatstroke

Pets with pre-existing respiratory problems or thicker coats are at higher risk of heatstroke, the RSPCA told pet owners.

"Puppies and senior dogs aren't as able to regulate their temperature. Owners should watch out for symptoms such as confusion, dehydration, drooling, increased heart rate, noisy breathing, panting, weakness, muscle spasms, or collapse.
