On 1st June 2026, a cyclist was riding along the Kreisbahnstraße, a new cycle path in Minden-Lübbecke (North Rhine-Westphalia), Germany, when her eye was caught by something unusual in the Gehlenbeck area. Tucked deep into the dense vegetation of a bush, near a small electrical transformer, was an abandoned travel bag.
The cyclist was not prepared for what was to come. Unsuspecting, she stopped to investigate. But what at first appeared to be carelessly dumped rubbish or lost luggage turned out, just seconds later upon opening it, to be a complete nightmare!
A shocking discovery
The scene that unfolded before the cyclist at that moment would stay with her forever: inside the bag was a grey tabby cat with white markings... And the poor animal was already in an advanced state of decomposition.
When the Lübbecke animal shelter made the terrible discovery public on 1st June 2026, animal lovers initially clung desperately to the hope of human kindness.
They fervently hoped that the cat might have died of natural causes or had to be put to sleep, and that the owner had simply, and coldly, wanted to save on disposal costs. It would have been a sad and undignified end, certainly, but at least one without prolonged suffering.
The horrifying detail
In their appeal, the volunteers asked for information about the cat's origin, warned local dog owners about the temporary presence of the bag, and urged people to refrain from any incitement to hatred.
However, this well-intentioned hope for a harmless explanation for the tragic discovery was shattered by one tiny, disturbing detail: the bag's zip had been deliberately secured with a cable tie! This made it impossible to open.
The logical and terrible conclusion hit social media users like a punch to the gut: why on earth would someone secure a dead animal in a way that would prevent any escape?
The cat was therefore most likely still alive when the bag was sealed and thrown into the bush – trapped in its own dark tomb, left to die a miserable death from suffocation or thirst in excruciating pain, completely unnoticed beside the cycle path.
The force of this revelation hit people hard. The post was flooded with a mixture of pure horror, heartbreak, and deep anger at such human callousness.
One user summed it up bluntly: ”I think the cat must have still been alive, otherwise they certainly wouldn't have used a cable tie. Speechless.”
The thought of this lonely fight for life was unbearable for many. Another user wrote, full of sadness: ”How unloved this poor animal must have been to deserve such an end. Simply despicable.”
While some openly hoped that karma would ”come back a hundredfold” for this act, others felt nothing but deep resignation in the face of such dark depths of humanity: ”I don't even want to go online anymore. All these poor creatures who simply don't stand a chance in life – it breaks my heart.”
