Vets examine a cat found in a box and discover a unique mark on her body

By Elise Petter

The journey home should have been completely uneventful for a resident of Long Island, New York. But as she stopped at a stop sign on 12th May, her eye was caught by an unusual and suspicious object.

At first, the driver drove past the box, but the image stuck in her mind. A few minutes later, driven by a gut feeling, she decided to turn back with her son. As they approached on foot, a faint meow broke the silence. Inside the carrier, with no food or water during an unusual heatwave in the area, was a 4-year-old cat.

Taped to the carrier's door was a handwritten note, accompanied by a small cross made of black beads. The letter explained that the cat, named Mittens, was born in Kentucky and described her as extremely affectionate. It ended with a heartbreaking plea: "Please take care of her". "We don't know how long she was left there," said Lora Wild, director of the Northport Cat Rescue Association. "It could have been two hours or two days."

A desperate plea

Once taken to safety, Mittens immediately lapped up some water before being placed with one of the rescue's foster families. Despite her ordeal, the cat proved to be an absolute sweetheart, demanding cuddles and giving gentle, welcoming headbutts to all her visitors.

For Lora Wild, the abandonment speaks to the former owners' distress: "Whoever had her loved her deeply. They must have acted out of desperation." However, the director points out that while the association is empathetic towards difficult situations, such as losing a home or a death in the family, abandoning an animal in this way is still a crime. The local SPCA has been notified, and CCTV footage from the area is being reviewed. There are much safer options available through rescue centres.

Ready for a new life

During a veterinary examination, volunteers discovered a charming and highly symbolic physical feature: Mittens has a patch of white fur in the shape of a perfect heart on her belly. For her carers, it's a sign of her resilience.

Now fully vaccinated and checked over, Mittens is officially ready to find her forever family. She is sociable with children and dogs and is just waiting for a loving home where she can finally put the memory of that Long Island roadside behind her and start a much brighter new chapter.
