Study reveals nearly half of UK owners let pets influence their relationships

By Greta Inglis

Would you end a relationship if your pet didn't like your partner? It seems almost half of UK pet owners would, with new research revealing a surprising truth.

The new findings, collected by Mars Inc., draw on thousands of "pet parent confessions" across the UK.

When asked if they would end a relationship because their pet didn't approve of their partner, 48% said they would. And the influence our pets have doesn't seem to stop there.

Surprising results

The study also found that over half (53%) of owners have willingly given up their spot on the sofa for their dog or cat, and 31% confide in their four-legged friend - regularly sharing gossip, worries or relationship woes.

Many owners admitted to missing social events to stay with their pet, with 14% willing to miss a friend's birthday, and 8% a wedding.

The best judgement

Dr Tammie King, an animal behaviour scientist at the Waltham Petcare Science Institute saw good reason behind the findings.

"Pets can be surprisingly good judges of character. Paying attention to their behaviour and body language can tell owners a lot about what makes their pet feel comfortable, safe and at ease." she explained.
