Sometimes, excursions can turn out to be dangerous, as was the case for a group of walkers and their dog.
Guide Emilio Huisa Tapia was showing a group of visitors around the canyon in Peru when he noticed another group ahead of them had stopped at the cliff edge.
A dangerous slip
Emilio immediately had a feeling that there had been an accident. After asking the group what was wrong, he learned that a dog who had been walking off her lead had slipped down the cliff. Emilio took it upon himself to climb down and get the dog.
The poor animal was stranded below, with no way to climb back up the steep slope. Emilio knows the canyon well. After carefully making his way down, he approached the dog. She was delighted to see him and seemed to know he was there to save her. He then secured the dog and began to climb back up.
A two-stage rescue
Once he reached a ledge, he gently pulled the dog up while calling to her, encouraging her to join him. Encouraged by Emilio, the dog followed him. Once she was level with him, the guide picked her up in his arms for the final part of the climb, taking great care to keep her safe and not to slip.
In the end, both Emilio and the dog made it back up safely. The dog was overjoyed to be back on solid ground and reunited with her family. We're so relieved that everyone is safe and sound!
