The report was sent to Eve Bañuelos, director of the charity based in Los Angeles, USA. It described nine severely emaciated puppies living by themselves inside an abandoned vehicle. Initial information suggested they had belonged to a homeless couple who, no longer able to provide for them, had left them behind.
The situation was critical. Without food and trapped in the confined space, the puppies wouldn't have survived for much longer. However, the rescue centre was already full. Eve Bañuelos initially feared she wouldn't be able to help, but then she made a desperate appeal to her team and community.
An incredible show of support
"We discussed it as a team and agreed that we would help as many puppies as we could find foster homes for," explains Eve Bañuelos. Thanks to a post on Facebook, five families came forward almost instantly to take in some of the litter. With no other options for the remaining four, the rescue centre decided to take them in temporarily, despite being at full capacity.
Once they were removed from the car, the nine little survivors received immediate medical care. They were so thin their ribs were showing, and they seemed terrified of any human contact.
A spectacular transformation
Now, a few weeks after their rescue, the change is dramatic. Thanks to a proper diet and a lot of love, the puppies have gained weight and are finally starting to come out of their shells. "They are all doing so much better, they're no longer skeletal!" the director says happily. "They honestly look like completely different dogs."
Eve Bañuelos hopes this story will inspire animal lovers to get involved, whether through adoption, volunteering, or donations. "If everyone supported their local rescue centres, it would make a huge difference. These puppies would never have to worry about finding a loving home again."
