Juliana DeWillems knows dog behaviour inside out. Yet, on 8th April, she was thrown into a total panic for ten long minutes when she saw her little Chihuahua, Matilda, suddenly become listless and unable to put weight on her front paw.

Juliana is a professional dog behaviourist. Her home in Leesburg, Virginia, USA, is completely dog-proofed for her small dogs. Yet, one-year-old Matilda suddenly "shut down", refusing to move and showing signs of extreme pain. ”A million possibilities ran through my head: a twisted ankle, a broken bone, a trapped paw...” Juliana shared.

Despite her stress, Juliana put her own teachings into practice: she stayed calm to assess the situation. After carefully scanning the living room floor, she finally spotted a tiny clue on the hardwood floor: a wasp. Suddenly, it all clicked into place.

What the CCTV revealed

While comforting Matilda, Juliana reviewed the footage from her indoor security camera. In the corner of the screen, the evidence was undeniable: it showed the little dog making contact with the insect before instantly starting to limp. The wasp had just stung the Chihuahua's paw.

After contacting a vet, Juliana monitored Matilda for any signs of an allergic reaction. On the specialist's advice, she gave her an antihistamine and soaked her paw in warm water with salts. Despite the pain, the little dog was very cooperative and let Juliana treat her without a fuss.

A full recovery and a viral sensation

By that evening, Matilda was already starting to walk normally again, although she was still tired the next day from the emotional shock. ”We often forget how exhausting such stressful events can be for our dogs,” her owner pointed out.

Shared on TikTok, the video of the incident has racked up more than 2.7 million views. Juliana hopes her experience will serve as a lesson: in an emergency, it is possible to comfort your pet while also thinking logically to find the root of the problem. Today, the "brave and strong" Matilda is back to her cheerful self, much to the delight of her 500,000 social media fans.
