The reason was certainly worrying: he had heard meowing coming from the family car.
Jennifer's husband had covered the car with a tarpaulin to protect it from the rain and cold.
An unusual hiding spot
When Jennifer and her son lifted the tarpaulin, they couldn't see or hear anything. Eventually, Jennifer removed the cover completely. It was then that they heard the meows more clearly. Three tiny kittens, curled up in a ball together, were on the back of the car's roof.
As Jennifer and her son were wondering what to do, the kittens' mother appeared out of nowhere and darted under the car to hide. Jennifer was worried that moving the kittens to a warm place would frighten the mother cat and make her run away.
A call for help
So, Jennifer placed the kittens in a shoebox on a soft, warm blanket and put them back where she had originally found them. Then, she quickly contacted the Paul Nadler at Bowie Citizens for Local Animal Welfare (CLAW) rescue centre for help.
A storm was forecast for the evening, making the situation even more urgent. Fortunately, the rescuers arrived as quickly as possible. They managed to secure the kittens without scaring the mother cat away. The rescuers had never seen a stray cat make a nest for her little ones on the roof of a car before. On Facebook, users offered some suggestions: perhaps the mother cat was trying to protect her kittens from predators, while others thought she wanted to shield them from the scorching heat of the sun on the tarmac.
For now, the mother cat and her kittens have been placed in a foster home. They are resting, and the mum is slowly starting to trust people and enjoy human contact. We wish them all the best for the future.
