In Cleveland, Texas, Zully Vasquez Ventura had a gut feeling when she locked eyes with a lonely dog. It was an intuition that would save an entire family.

Zully is no stranger to rescues. Since moving to Texas, she has already helped over 5,000 animals in distress. But on this particular day, her attention was drawn to a floppy-eared dog wandering alone. One detail immediately struck the young woman: the animal's teats were full of milk. She had just given birth.

For several days, Zully tried to earn her trust. She fed her and spoke to her, hoping the dog would lead her to her little ones. But the animal wouldn't budge. She refused to move or give any indication of where to go. So, Zully decided on a different tactic. She hid and watched the dog's movements, and eventually, the dog disappeared into a wood just as a storm was rolling in.

A discovery among the rubbish

In the pouring rain, the rescuer searched the woods for over an hour. The dog followed her, but she barked to lead her away from certain paths. Zully realised the mother was trying to create a diversion to protect her hiding place. Just as she was about to leave the woods, a glint of glass near a pile of rubbish at the roadside caught her eye.

It was there, in the middle of the rubbish she drove past every day, that she heard a small cry. Under a pile of bubble wrap and dirty blankets, inside an abandoned cardboard box, three tiny puppies were huddled together. "I couldn't believe it. They were right there in the rubbish, right under my nose," Zully said emotionally. The mother, whose coat blended in perfectly with the debris, had hidden there to remain unseen.

A new start for River

The most heartbreaking moment came when Zully gathered the little ones to put them safely in her car. Terrified, the dog went back to hide in her box, as if she thought she was part of the rubbish herself. Finally, seeing her babies were safe, she jumped into the vehicle, refusing to leave their side.

Taken in by the “Three Little Pitties Rescue” organisation, the small family received the care they needed. Although one of the puppies sadly didn't survive, the mother, now named River, and her two other little ones have all been adopted.
